CRIME ALERT

TO:            MEMBERS OF THE OFF-CAMPUS COMMUNITY

INCIDENT:        Robbery

LOCATION:        6000 block of McPherson

DATE/TIME:        Sunday, November 20 at about 11:30pm

SPECIFICS:    Two persons not affiliated with Washington University reported they were walking up to the front door of a building in the 6000 block of McPherson when they were approached by two suspects.  One of the suspects displayed a handgun and demanded their wallet and purse.  Both suspects then fled south on Des Peres.  The victims were not physically injured.

SUSPECT(S):    Both suspects are described as black males; 17-20 years of age; about 5’7-5’10 in height; one had short dreadlocks and was wearing a black jacket; the other was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt

PRECAUTIONS:
·    Avoid walking or jogging alone and never walk or jog alone after dark.
·    Always choose a well-lit path and avoid dark or vacant areas.
·    Carry a whistle to summon help.
·    Be alert to your surroundings.  If you suspect you are being followed, run in a different direction; go to the other side of the street and yell or whistle for help; or head quickly to a lighted area, a group of people, or business.
·    If you are confronted by a thief, give them what they want and don’t chase them as they leave.  Report suspicious persons or activity immediately to the Police.
·    Be extra cautious if someone approaches your car and asks for information.

LOCATION:         Skinker and Washington

DATE/TIME:        Friday, October 21, 2005, at about 8:30pm

SPECIFICS:        Two individuals were walking at approximately 8:30pm in
                  the area of Skinker and Washington on Friday night when
                  they were approached from behind by two suspects.  The
                  suspects displayed a handgun and demanded their wallets
                  and book bags.  The suspects then fled east on
                  Washington.  No one was injured in the incident.
SUSPECT
DESCRIPTIONS:     Suspect #1:  Black male; mid-twenties; 6’3” tall; clean
                  shaven; wearing a black leather coat, black shirt with a
                  white shirt underneath, and black scarf on his head.
                  Suspect #2: Black male; 5’10” tall; 200 pounds; “puffy”
                  hair”; wearing a baseball type cap with black and white
                  lettering.


PRECAUTIONS:
•     Be alert to your surroundings.  If you suspect you are being
followed, run in a different direction; go to the other side of the street
      and yell or whistle for help; or head quickly to a lighted area, a
group of people, or business.
•     If you are confronted by a thief, give them what they want and don’t

INCIDENT:         Robbery

LOCATION:         Skinker and Kingsbury

DATE/TIME:        Friday, October 14, 2005, at about 2am

SPECIFICS:        Four individuals were walking at approximately 2am in the
                  area of Skinker and Kingsbury when they were approached
                  from behind by two suspects.  The suspects displayed a
                  handgun and demanded their wallets.  The suspects then
                  fled north towards Delmar.  No one was injured in the
                  incident.


PRECAUTIONS:
·     Be alert to your surroundings.  If you suspect you are being
followed, run in a different direction; go to the other side of the street
and yell or whistle for help; or head quickly to a lighted area, a group of
people, or business.
·     If you are confronted by a thief, give them what they want and don’t

INCIDENT:        BICYCLE THEFTS

SPECIFICS:    During the past week there have been 4 bicycle thefts across campus, with most targeted along the north side of the campus.   The most common targets have been bicycles that are either unsecured or locked with lightweight cables.


PRECAUTIONS:    
·    Report suspicious persons or activity immediately to University Police at 5-5555 or go to the nearest emergency telephone.
·    Always lock your bike to a bike rack in a visible and well-lighted area.
·    Don’t leave a bicycle unlocked ever!
·    Don’t lock your bike to itself (the front wheel locked to the frame).

CRIME ALERT

INCIDENT:         Robbery

LOCATION:         6000 block of Kingsbury

DATE/TIME:        Sunday, September 11 at about 3:30am

SPECIFICS:        Victim stated he had parked his vehicle in front of his
                  house, and as he was walking towards his front door, four
                  male suspects approached him.  Victim stated he was
                  grabbed and struck by 3 of the subjects while the fourth
                  subject removed his wallet and keys from his pockets.
                  Victim stated all four males then ran East on Kingsbury.


PRECAUTIONS:
·     Avoid walking or jogging alone and never walk or jog alone after
dark.
·     Always choose a well-lit path and avoid dark or vacant areas.
·     Carry a whistle to summon help.
·     Be alert to your surroundings.  If you suspect you are being

CRIME ALERT

INCIDENT:        Robbery

LOCATION:        6100 block of Waterman

DATE/TIME:    Sunday, August 28 at about 11:00pm

SPECIFICS:    A victim reports she was walking towards Skinker on the sidewalk in the 6100 block of Waterman and observed two subjects seated on some steps.  She reports the subjects started to follow her and then one grabbed her bag.  She initially resisted---however one of the subjects struck her in the face with his hand.  She fell to the ground and the subjects took her bag and cell phone.  The subjects ran west towards Skinker.  The victim was not seriously injured.


PRECAUTIONS:
•    Avoid walking or jogging alone and never walk or jog alone after dark.
•    Always choose a well-lit path and avoid dark or vacant areas.

INCIDENT:        Burglary

LOCATION:        6100 Block of Waterman

DATE:        July 14, 2005

SPECIFICS:     A resident reports a suspect broke the kitchen door window and was reaching in and fumbling with the locks in an attempt to gain entry.  The suspect was scared away by a roommate.  It is believed the suspect gained entry to the fire escape because a security gate was left open.

PRECAUTIONS:
We recommend you take the following precautions:
•    Report suspicious persons or activity immediately to Police at 9-1-1 or go to the nearest emergency telephone.
•    LOCK YOUR APARTMENT DOOR, even when you are at home.
•    Lock the windows to your apartment.  If you have a sliding glass door, secure it further by placing a piece of wood in the track to prevent it from opening.
•    Never prop open exterior doors or gates.  If you see a door propped, close it.
•    Don’t allow people you do not know to “tailgate” behind you into the building.
•    When someone knocks at your door, don’t open it unless you know your visitor.
•    If the person is a maintenance person, ask that identification be slipped under the door or through the mail slot.  Call the employer to verify that maintenance work was scheduled to be performed.  Refuse to deal with anyone who won’t comply with this request.
•    Someone may knock at your door to use the telephone.  Never open the door.  Take the message and make the call for them.
•    If you arrive home to find your door ajar, hear unusual sounds or believe your apartment has been broken into, DON’T GO IN!  Go to a telephone and call the Police.
•    When you are away from your residence, leave your interior lights on.

INCIDENT:        Robbery

LOCATION:        900 block of Eastgate

DATE/TIME:    Saturday, July 16 at about 1:30am

SPECIFICS:    A victim reports she and a friend were entering an apartment building when two suspects approached them on foot and grabbed the purse of one of the victims.  One victim tried to retain the purse and was hit in the face by the suspect.  The second victim was also struck in the face by a suspect and her purse taken.  The suspects then fled in one or both of the following described vehicles.

SUSPECT
VEHICLES:    Burgundy or dark colored 4-door sedan---possibly a Ford Taurus

    White colored 4-door vehicle

LOCATION:        6100 block of Waterman

DATE/TIME:    Friday, May 20 at about 12:55am

SPECIFICS:    A victim reports he was retrieving items from his vehicle when a white, small, older type vehicle stopped in the street next to him.  A suspect exited the vehicle, displayed a handgun and stated “give me the car”.  The suspect struck the victim with the handgun and then drove off with the victim’s vehicle.  The other vehicle followed.  The victim was not seriously injured.

SPECIFICS:    A victim reports being approached by two suspects while walking east in the 6100 block of McPherson.  One suspect displayed a handgun to the victim and demanded money. The second suspect took her purse.  Both suspects then fled on foot west on McPherson.

LOCATION:        Parking lots

SPECIFICS:    There have been several vehicle thefts from parking lots on campus over the past week.  In particular, DODGE RAM 1500 PICK-UP TRUCKS have been targeted.  These thefts appear to fit a pattern of similar incidents in communities surrounding the campus.
 

PRECAUTIONS:   
•    Report suspicious persons or activity immediately to University Police at 5-5555 or go to the nearest emergency telephone.
•    If you hear a vehicle alarm, contact Police immediately.
•    Do not leave expensive property such as CD’s, purses, radar detectors, cellular telephones and portable stereos in plain view in your vehicle.  Lock them in your trunk or take them with you.

LOCATION:         Skinker-DeBaliviere Neighborhood

SPECIFICS:        There have been several recent vehicle break-ins to vehicles in the area of Rosedale and Waterman.  In                   several of these cases tools or other force has been used                  to gain entry to the vehicle and stereos or other items of value have been stolen.


PRECAUTIONS:
Report suspicious persons or activity immediately to Police at 9-1-1
or go to the nearest emergency telephone.
If you hear a vehicle alarm, contact Police immediately.

INCIDENT:        BURGLARY/SUSPICIOUS PERSON

LOCATION:        LOPATA HALL at THE VILLAGE

WHEN:        SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 12 AT ABOUT 7:25PM

SPECIFICS:    Based on information provided by witnesses, Washington University Police have identified a suspect in a suspicious person incident that resulted in the delayed report of a Burglary to a residence hall room on Saturday night.  The suspect (described below) was seen distributing fliers seeking candidates for high paying management positions.  The subject identified himself in the flier by the name TARREN CLARK.  Police have a “wanted” out for the subject and are seeking him.

SUSPECT
DESCRIPTION:    Black Male; 26 years of age; 5 feet, 11 inches in height; 195 pounds; short hair;


PRECAUTIONS:   
•    Report suspicious persons or activity immediately to University Police at 5-5555 or go to the nearest emergency telephone.
•    LOCK YOUR ROOM DOOR whenever you leave, even if it’s for a short time.  Also be sure and lock your door when you will be showering or sleeping.

INCIDENT:        BURGLARY

LOCATION:        6100 BLOCK OF WATERMAN

WHEN:        February 4, 2005, at approximately 10am

SPECIFICS:    On Friday, February 4, the residents of an apartment in the 6100 block of Waterman interrupted a Burglary in their apartment at about 10am.  Upon observing the suspect in the apartment, he fled and no property was stolen.  No one was injured in the incident.  There was no forced entry into the apartment. 

SUSPECT:    The suspect is described as a black male; mid to late 30’s; dark colored pants; maroon colored jacket; black “skull” cap;


PRECAUTIONS:
We recommend you take the following precautions:
•    Report suspicious persons or activity immediately to Police at 9-1-1 or go to the nearest emergency telephone.

INCIDENT:        BURGLARY

LOCATION:        WHEELER HALL

WHEN:        THURSDAY,  JANUARY 27, 2005
BETWEEN 9PM AND MIDNIGHT

SPECIFICS:    A residence hall room was entered while the residents were away and several items of value were removed.  There was no forced entry to the room.  The incident is believed to have occurred between 9pm and Midnight.

ANYONE WHO OBSERVED ANY UNUSUAL ACTIVITY DURING THIS TIME PERIOD SHOULD CONTACT THE UNIVERSITY POLICE AT 935-5555

DATE/TIME:    Tuesday, November 30 at about 8:15pm

SPECIFICS:    A victim reports being approached by the suspect after exiting his car in the 700 block of Interdrive.  The suspect displayed a handgun and demanded the victim’s wallet.  The victim initially delayed in complying with the suspect’s demand and the suspect struck him in the face.  The victim gave the suspect his wallet and the suspect fled the area on foot.
