TO:            MEMBERS OF THE  CAMPUS COMMUNITY

INCIDENT:       Bike Thefts

With the start of the academic year we have seen an increase in bicycle thefts on campus.  In some cases the bikes have been left unsecured or cable-type locks have been defeated.

The Police Department offers Kryptonite "U"-Locks which are more difficult for a thief to defeat.  We encourage the campus community to obtain these locks 24 hours a day by visiting the Police Department (located on the So40).  Cost for a lock is $20.

We also offer these additional tips:
-Always lock your bike;
-Lock your bike to one of the bike racks located on campus.  Park it in a visible and well-lighted place;
-If a "U"-Lock is used, position the bike frame and wheels so that as much open space as possible is secured within the lock;
-Don't lock your bike to small trees, posts, or disability accessible ramps;

As always, if you see suspicious activity near a bike rack or other area on campus, alert University Police by calling 935-5555.
