CRIME ADVISORY

TO:               MEMBERS OF THE OFF-CAMPUS COMMUNITY

INCIDENT:         Burglary

LOCATION:         6100 Block of Waterman

SPECIFICS:        Resident of an apartment located in the 6100 block of
                  Waterman reported she found a subject in her apartment at
                  about 10:45am this morning (Wednesday) and when the
                  subject spotted the victim he fled from the apartment.
                  On the way out, the suspect took the victim’s purse.  The
                  victim was not physically injured and is not affiliated
                  with the University.  The incident was not reported to
                  Police until about 1 hour after it occurred.
SUSPECT
DESCRIPTION:      Black male; 5’10” in height; 200-210 pounds; wearing a
                  dark tan skull cap and a dark jacket.  Suspect was
                  carrying a bag.

PRECAUTIONS:
We recommend you take the following precautions:
·     Report suspicious persons or activity immediately to Police at 9-1-1
or go to the nearest emergency telephone.
·     LOCK YOUR APARTMENT DOOR, even when you are at home.
·     Lock the windows to your apartment.  If you have a sliding glass
door, secure it further by placing a piece of wood in the track to prevent
it from opening.
·     Never prop open exterior doors or gates.  If you see a door propped,
close it.
·     Don’t allow people you do not know to “tailgate” behind you into the
building.
·     When someone knocks at your door, don’t open it unless you know your
visitor.
·     If the person is a maintenance person, ask that identification be
slipped under the door or through the mail slot.  Call the employer to
verify that maintenance work was scheduled to be performed.  Refuse to deal
with anyone who won’t comply with this request.
·     Someone may knock at your door to use the telephone.  Never open the
door.  Take the message and make the call for them.
·     If you arrive home to find your door ajar, hear unusual sounds or
believe your apartment has been broken into, DON’T GO IN!  Go to a
telephone and call the Police.
·     When you are away from your residence, leave your interior lights on.

investigation.

   INCIDENT:      VEHICLE BREAK-INS

   LOCATION:     Skinker and McPherson

   SPECIFICS:    St. Louis Police have reported several vehicle
                     break-ins in the parking lot at Skinker and McPherson
                     sometime between 11pm Tuesday night and 9am Wednesday
                     morning.

   PRECAUTIONS:
   ·  Report suspicious persons or activity immediately to Police at 9-1-1
   or go to the nearest emergency telephone.
   ·  If you hear a vehicle alarm, contact Police immediately.
   ·  Do not leave expensive property such as laptops, CD’s, purses, radar
   detectors, cellular telephones and portable stereos in plain view in
   your vehicle.  Lock them in your trunk or take them with you.
   ·  Lock your vehicle

CRIME ALERT

INCIDENT:         SHOOTING INCIDENT

LOCATION:         Cabanne and Eastgate

WHEN:       Wednesday, October 29, 2008, at about 2;30pm

SPECIFICS:        University City Police report that at about 2:30pm this
                  afternoon a drive-by shooting incident occurred at a park
                  at Cabanne and Eastgate.  None of the persons involved
                  were members of the Washington University community and
                  no one was injured.  University City Police are
                  investigating.  Police believe the suspects and the
                  potential victims knew each other and this was NOT a
                  random incident.

RESPONSE:         Report suspicious activities/persons immediately to the
University City Police at 9-1-1 or via Blue Light Emergency Telephone.
Contact University City Police if you have any information that might
assist in this investigation.

INCIDENT:        VEHICLE BREAK-INS

LOCATION:        Skinker-Debaliviere Neighborhood

SPECIFICS:    St. Louis Police have reported a recent increase in vehicle break-ins in the Skinker- Debaliviere neighborhood.  They have identified no particular patterns in the time of occurrence.   

PRECAUTIONS:  
•    Report suspicious persons or activity immediately to Police at 9-1-1 or go to the nearest emergency telephone.
•    If you hear a vehicle alarm, contact Police immediately.
•    Do not leave expensive property such as CD’s, purses, radar detectors, cellular telephones and portable stereos in plain view in your vehicle.  Lock them in your trunk or take them with you.
•    Lock your vehicle

INCIDENT:        Robbery

LOCATION:        Mehlville and Washington

WHEN:        Sunday, October 12 at about 9:20pm

SPECIFICS:             On Sunday, October 12, at about 9:20pm a female subject was walking near Mehlville and Washington when she was approached by 4 subjects.  One of the subjects displayed a gun and demanded her backpack.  She gave the suspects her backpack and they fled north towards Delmar.  The victim was not physically injured.  The victim was unable to provide a detailed description of the suspects.

PRECAUTIONS:
·    If you are confronted by a thief, give them what they want and don’t chase them as they leave.  Report suspicious persons or activity immediately to the Police.
·    Avoid walking or jogging alone and never walk or jog alone after dark.
·    Always choose a well-lit path and avoid dark or vacant areas.
·    Carry a whistle to summon help.
·    Be alert to your surroundings.  If you suspect you are being followed, run in a different direction; go to the other side of the street and yell or whistle for help; or head quickly to a lighted area, a group of people, or an Emergency Telephone.
·    Be extra cautious if someone approaches your car and asks for information.

INCIDENT:        Car Jacking

LOCATION:        Parking Lot at Loop Lofts

DATE/TIME:    Saturday, September 27th at about 3:30-4:00am (reported to Police on October 6)

SPECIFICS:    Police were not notified until the early morning hours of October 6 about this event.  Victim reports he was exiting his car at about 3:30am-4:00am on September 27 in the parking lot on the Skinker side of the Loop Lofts (outside the gated area) when he was approached by a woman he described as distraught.  She begged the victim for a ride and eventually displayed a knife.  The victim then drove the suspect to a corner on Delmar near Clara where she exited the vehicle.  The victim was not physically injured and had nothing taken.  The victim has declined to formally report the incident.

SUSPECT:    Black female; middle-aged; 5’8” inches in height; slightly heavy

PRECAUTIONS:
•    Avoid walking or jogging alone and never walk or jog alone after dark.
•    Always choose a well-lit path and avoid dark or vacant areas.
•    Carry a whistle to summon help.
•    Be alert to your surroundings.  If you suspect you are being followed, run in a different direction; go to the other side of the street and yell or whistle for help; or head quickly to a lighted area, a group of people, or business.

INCIDENT:        BURGLARY

LOCATION:        LOPATA HOUSE, 2ND FLOOR

WHEN:        SEPTEMBER 1, 6:45PM-7:45PM

SPECIFICS:    Unknown subject(s) entered an unlocked suite and removed two laptop computers sometime between 6:45pm and 7:45pm on Monday evening.

PRECAUTIONS:  
•    Report suspicious persons or activity immediately to University Police at 5-5555 or go to the nearest emergency telephone.
•    LOCK YOUR ROOM/SUITE DOOR or other access points to your room/suite whenever you leave, even if it’s for a short time.  Also be sure and lock your door when you will be showering or sleeping.
•    Never prop open exterior doors.  If you see a door propped, close it.
•    Don’t allow people you do not know to “tailgate” behind you into the building.

CRIME ADVISORY

INCIDENT:         Burglary

LOCATION:         6100 Block of Waterman

SPECIFICS:        Residents of an apartment located in the 6100 block of
                  Waterman reported the rear door of their apartment forced
                  open sometime between 12:30pm and 2pm on February 5.
                  Several items of value were taken from the apartment.

                  A suspicious vehicle was seen in the area at the time.
                  The vehicle was described as a purple colored older model
                  Saturn with Missouri license plates.

PRECAUTIONS:
We recommend you take the following precautions:
·     Report suspicious persons or activity immediately to Police at 9-1-1
or go to the nearest emergency telephone.
·     LOCK YOUR APARTMENT DOOR, even when you are at home.

INCIDENT: Robbery
 
LOCATION: South 40 (near Mudd/Park)
 
WHEN: Friday, January 18, 2008 at approximately 7:40pm
 
SPECIFICS:  On Friday evening at about 7:40pm a student was walking in the area north of Mudd/Park on So40.  The victim was approached by the suspect who displayed a handgun and demanded her purse.  The suspect then fled the area towards Big Bend and Wydown.  The victim was not physically injured. The victim is missing a large dark brown "Coach" brand purse.
 
Suspect Description: Black Male; 6'0-6'1; early 20's; thin build; wearing
blue jeans, red sweatshirt with a hood (hood down), black jacket
 
PRECAUTIONS:
· Avoid walking or jogging alone and never walk or jog alone after dark.
· Always choose a well-lit path and avoid dark or vacant areas.

· Be alert to your surroundings.  If you suspect you are being followed,

INCIDENT:        BURGLARY TO RESIDENCE HALL

LOCATION:        SOUTH 40

WHEN:        December 21-28, 2007

SPECIFICS:    During the Holiday Break period, several residence hall suites in Hurd, Hitzeman and Myers complex were entered and property removed.  Initial investigation has revealed the suspect(s) likely entered the suites by accessing the balconies on the outside of the building.  The incidents occurred at a time when the buildings were largely unoccupied.

SPECIAL NOTE:    Returning students who suspect they may have been the victim of a theft should not touch items and call the Police immediately.
