Police Authority and Responsibility

We provide law enforcement services to the Danforth Campus 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

WUPD Officers are commissioned through St. Louis County Police Department, meeting state requirements for police certification. WUPD Officers are armed and possess the authority to make arrests and investigate criminal and non-criminal incidents.

Our Officers bring a wide array of law enforcement experience to the Washington University community. They receive on-going, progressive training to maintain a high standard of professional and community-oriented policing. WUPD holds memberships with police associations at the county, state and national levels.

The Danforth Campus is geographically located in four different police jurisdictions. Although the primary jurisdiction is unincorporated St. Louis County, buildings are also located in St. Louis City, University City and Clayton.

We maintain a liaison with these agencies through regular contact and coordinated efforts to maintain safety and security in the area. St. Louis City, University City and Clayton Police Departments provide us with reports of incidents occurring in their respective venues.

WUPD also collaborates with various police and public safety agencies throughout the St. Louis area for safety initiatives and training efforts.
