Incident Related Information
On 07/17/2022 at 6:50pm, a student reported to WUPD that at 2:30pm they had parked and secured their Hyundai Elantra in the 500 block of Kingsland. Upon returning at 6:50pm the student observed glass on the ground and their vehicle gone. The student immediately reported the incident to University City PD and to WUPD.
Within the last few weeks, there have been three reports of vehicles stolen in the University City area. They have all been Hyundai or Kia brand vehicles.
Local police municipalities have recently reported an increase in motor vehicle thefts of Kia and Hyundai brand vehicles.

Response

University City is investigating these incidents. WUPD will be conducting increased patrols in the area.

6100 blk McPherson

Specifics

At around 9:15pm on 06/29/2022, there was a “strong-arm” robbery outside a restaurant in the 6100 block of McPherson. A female store employee had just closed the business and was walking to her car when a female subject approached her. The female subject said something unintelligible to the employee. When the employee did not respond, the subject began to physically assault the employee while trying to take the employee’s purse. As the two were struggling, a male subject, approached and took the employee’s purse. Both the male and female subjects got into a vehicle parked nearby and fled the scene, driving east on McPherson. No weapons were displayed.

The victim described the first subject as a heavy-set 5’7” female, estimated to be in her mid-30s with a gap between her front teeth. The female subject was wearing a blue scarf around her head and a blue and white shirt. The second subject was described by the victim as a male in his 40s wearing a blue t-shirt.

The victim sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene and released by emergency medical services.

On 06/29/2022 at 8:22am, it was reported to WUPD that four male subjects were possibly trying to break into vehicles parked on a private parking lot in the 6200 block of Delmar. When officers arrived on scene, the subjects had already fled the area and the officers found that three vehicles had been broken into and wallets had been removed. It was later determined that the subjects arrived in a blue BMW SUV and left in the same vehicle.

WUPD is assisting the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department in their investigation into this incident. WUPD will be conducting increased patrols in the area.

Local police municipalities have recently reported an increase in motor vehicle break-ins across the St. Louis region.

Specifics

On 06/23/2022 at 9:12pm, a student reported to WUPD that at 2:00pm they had parked and secured their 2018 Kia Sportage on the 6200 block of Clemens Ave. near the Limit Ave. intersection. Upon returning at 8:00pm the student observed glass on the ground and their vehicle gone. The student immediately reported the incident to University City PD and later reported the incident to WUPD.

Within the last two weeks another student also reported to University City PD that their Kia brand vehicle was stolen from the 6200 block of Enright.

University City is investigating these incidents. WUPD will be conducting increased patrols in the area.

Specifics

On 06/17/2022 at 10:55pm, a student living in a private apartment in the 700 block of Leland Ave., heard someone enter their apartment. The student called out to see who was there. When there was no response, the student went to investigate. The subject left the apartment and ran from the area. Nothing was taken.

University City and WUPD officers responded to the scene. It was determined that the subject entered the apartment through an unlocked door.

WUPD will be conducting increased patrols in the area.

• Lock the windows to your apartment when closed, even if you are home. Close and lock windows when you leave your apartment.

• If you have a sliding glass door, secure it further by placing a piece of wood in the track to prevent it from opening.
• Never prop open exterior doors or gates. If you see a door propped, close it.
• Don’t allow people you do not know to “tailgate” behind you into the building.
• When someone knocks at your door, don’t open it unless you know your visitor or you can confirm that the person should be in the building.
• If you arrive home to find your door ajar, hear unusual sounds or believe your apartment has been broken into, DON’T GO IN! Go to a telephone and call the Police.
• If you have security or safety concerns about your apartment or building facilities, discuss this information with your landlord.
• Consider installing a personal surveillance monitoring device on the entrance to your apartment.

At around 9p.m. on 05/08/2022, there was a robbery at a restaurant the 800 block of Skinker Blvd. A subject, carrying scissors, entered the establishment and took cash out of the register. The subject left the store, unknown direction of travel.

6100 blk Waterman

Specifics

This morning, around 1:20 am, a person unaffiliated with the university was sitting on the patio of a private apartment in the 6100 block of Waterman when the person observed two male subjects looking into his vehicle. The person verbally challenged the suspects; at which time they began shooting at him. The person stated that he fired a round from his own pistol in self-defense, which caused the suspects to enter two vehicles and flee the alley at a high rate of speed. As the vehicles sped away, it was reported that they were still firing numerous shots. During the exchange of gunfire, a round apparently “ricocheted” and went through the rear screen and glass door of an apartment of two students in the 6100 block of Pershing Ave.

No one was injured as a result of this incident.

The St. Louis City Police Department is investigating. The Washington University Police Department is assisting in the investigation.

Specifics

The Washington University Police Department is issuing a Crime Alert due to a pattern of recent burglaries at off-campus, private apartments over the past week. All reported burglaries involved unlocked or improperly functioning windows.

Most recently, three students reported that between 03/07/22 and 03/15/22, their private apartment in the 6000 block of Pershing Ave., had been burglarized. The students indicated the incident had occurred while they were away on vacation. It appears that entry was gained through an unsecured bathroom window. Several personal effects and other miscellaneous items were taken.

Specifics

Around 7:30pm this evening, a student living in a private apartment in the 6000 block of Waterman came home and was parking his vehicle behind his apartment when he observed a male subject climbing out of the 1st floor window of his apartment. The student confronted the subject and the subject ran from the scene. The student later recovered two book bags, but two watches that were taken. The subject was seen driving away from the area in a vehicle that was parked in the 6000 block of McPherson.

It appears the subject entered and exited the apartment through an improperly functioning window.

Specifics

A student and his roommate, an alumnus of the university, reported that at or about 10:10 pm on 03/09/2022, their private apartment in the 6600 block of Kingsbury Blvd. was burglarized. The roommate reported being in the apartment when he thought he heard someone moving around in the student's bedroom. The roommate never saw the person who made the noise. The student returned to the apartment a short time later and observed that someone had entered and exited his bedroom through an unsecure, ground floor window. Upon checking his room, the student discovered that a pair of shoes and jewelry was taken.
